New Orleans AD Jim Miller discusses Hurricane Gustav - Sep 04, 2008 | 8:09:17
posted by: Howard Smith

In the aftermath of Hurricane Gustav, we were able to catch up with Jim Miller, the director of athletics at New Orleans. When we taped the interview late Wednesday afternoon, Miller was driving back to New Orleans for the first time since evacuating the city over the weekend.
The majority of the school's athletics teams stayed together at other college campuses while the hurricane passed. According to Miller, the situation is "a lot better than it was three years ago after Katrina."
In our conversation, Miller described the detailed evacuation plans that were carried out in order to keep all of its student-athletes away from danger. Miller stressed that uncertainty is always present, so no matter what part of the country a school is located, it must be ready for anything.

Hope AD discusses Olympic and intercollegiate swimming - Aug 15, 2008 | 10:20:31
posted by: Howard Smith

Swimming has been one of the marquee sports during the current Olympics, largely due to the unbelievable success of Michael Phelps. But Phelps hasn't been the only one setting world records over the last several months. The rise in technology, especially with regard to Speedo's new LZR Racer swimwear, has sparked a great deal of curiosity and debate around the sport at all levels, including intercollegiate athletics.
On this recent edition of Campus Connection, we talk about intercollegiate swimming issues with two individuals who have a connection to swimming at Division III Hope College - Eva Dean Folkert, the women's director of athletics, and Kyle Waterstone, a recently graduated swimming student-athlete who currently serves as an intern in the brand strategies and event group at the NCAA national office.
Waterstone discusses the remarkable performance of Phelps in these Olympics and how he would fare in college swimming. Additionally, Waterstone shares his opinions on swimming's new swimsuit technology. Folkert adds insight about the challenges that these new swimsuits will impose on intercollegiate athletics - especially at the Division III level - from budget and availability perspectives.
Additionally, a few weeks ago, we discussed the Speedo LZR Racer swimsuit issue with Skip Foster, the chair of the Division I Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Committee.

Former California all-American, U.S. Olympic softball player Vicky Galindo - Aug 06, 2008 | 12:05:54
posted by: Howard Smith

As the Olympics get set to begin later this week in Beijing, we continue our Olympic focus on the Double-A Zone by talking with American softball player Vicky Galindo.
Galindo was a 2006 graduate at California, where she led the Bears to three Women's College World Series appearances. The third baseman also was a two-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association all-American during her collegiate career. Since her graduation, in addition to playing on the U.S. National Team and for the National Pro Fastball's Chicago Bandits, Galindo served as an assistant coach at San Jose State in 2007.
Galindo has enjoyed an incredibly successful stint with the U.S. National Team, including gold medals at the 2006 and 2007 World Cups of Softball and the 2007 Pan American Games. Galindo is one of the stars who hopes to lead the American squad to another gold medal in the Olympics.
This will be Galindo's first Olympics as a player, although she has experienced the Olympics once before. In 1996, Galindo's mother wrote a letter for a radio station contest that explained why Vicky deserved to carry the Olympic torch on its way to Atlanta. Vicky ended up being selected, and at the age of 12, she had her first taste of the Olympics. As Vicky told us, "That's actually when I really starting thinking, 'well, maybe I can play softball in the Olympics.' "
In our conversation, Galindo discusses her student-athlete experience at California, the challenges of being a coach and player, and the U.S. National Team's expectations and pressure in Beijing.

Olympic wrestler, former NCAA champion Brad Vering - Jul 31, 2008 | 8:47:12

Before the Olympics get underway in Beijing next week, the Double-A Zone is turning its attention to American Olympians who have a connection to intercollegiate athletics.
For this Campus Connection, we talked with Brad Vering, a wrestler who will be appearing in his second straight Olympics. The 30-year-old Vering was a 2000 National Champion and a three-time all-American during his undergraduate days at Nebraska, as well as a first-team National Wrestling Coaches Association all-academic selection. Recently, he has been a volunteer assistant coach at American, where he helped coach AU wrestler Josh Glenn to a 2007 NCAA National Championship. Vering, who was named the 2007 United States Olympic Committee wrestler of the year, is considered to be a strong medal contender at these Olympic games.
In our conversation, Vering discussed what it means to go back for his second Olympics, his relationship with American University Wrestling Coach Mark Cody, training with Glenn, and his expectations in Beijing.

Millikin volleyball coach and former student-athlete discuss Division III recruiting - Jul 24, 2008 | 15:42:35
posted by: Howard Smith

Recruiting on the Division III level, despite the absence of athletics scholarships, is a duty that most coaches take seriously. The large percentage of Division III student-athletes will never go pro in their respective sport, which puts an even greater importance on the academic side. Further, since Division III student-athletes compete without athletics aid, they truly regard their sports participation as an avocation.
In this edition of Campus Connection, I explore these issues with Rachel Cook, a recent graduate and former volleyball student-athlete at Millikin University, and the school's head volleyball coach Debbie Kiick. Cook is currently serving as an NCAA intern in public and media relations.
Coach Kiick discusses her recruiting practices and how she tries to find the right kind of student-athlete who will fit in both at the school and in her volleyball program. Cook talks about being recruited in high school and why she ultimately chose to attend school and play volleyball at the Division III level. She also offers some great advice for future student-athletes who are considering attending a Division III institution.

For the first time on Campus Connection, we spoke with a coach and one of his former student-athletes - Jessica Chrabaszcz, a recent-graduate and former softball student-athlete at Delaware State University and the school's head softball coach, Jeff Savage. Chrabaszcz is currently interning with the NCAA in the Eligibility Center.
Last year, the Hornets won their first ever MEAC Championship, in large part due to Chrabaszcz's play on the field. Chrabaszcz also excelled in the classroom and was named 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America First Team.
In the interview, the duo discussed many things related to the student-athlete experience at Delaware State. Coach Savage, who was kind enough to join us from the recruiting trail, gave a background on the institution and what it means to him to see his student-athletes be successful after they leave his program. Chrabaszcz talked about her decision to attend Delaware State out of high school, the student-athlete experience, and what she learned from her collegiate days that she will use throughout her career.

OH...IO!!! Jim Tressel - May 22, 2008 | 12:21:41

Three questions every Buckeye knows the answer to:
1. OH?: IO!
2. Is it really that important to beat Michigan?: I won't even dignify that with an answer.
3. When in doubt what should you consider wearing to a football game?: A sweater vest.
I grew up watching OSU football with my dad every Saturday. So, interviewing Jim Tressel earlier this week at a fundraiser for the Wilson Football Museum in Ada, Ohio--as my dad stood three feet away--ranked as one of the most memorable experiences of my life.
Coach Tressel spoke about the importance of academics and athletics and even told me why he wears his infamous vest.

The assistant director of athletics and senior woman administrator at Adelphi, Deneé discusses Adelphi's commitment to the Division II philosophy of balance, as well as the outstanding success of the university's student-athletes in the classroom.

Wallace, who arrived at Georgetown as a walk-on, was recently admitted to the prestigious Georgetown School of Law. Although he hasn't decided if he will pursue professional basketball after graduation, he's thrilled that he will one day join the legal profession.

A key member of last year's Georgetown team that advanced to the Final Four, Wallace is still hoping to achieve something most lawyers never get to - a national championship.

Coach Sets Standard Of Success In Cullowhee - Feb 26, 2008 | 15:57:33

When Western Carolina's women's basketball team beat Charleston last night, the Catamounts grabbed their 23rd victory of the season, one shy of the school record set last season.

At the helm of the WCU program is Kellie Jolly Harper, who in her fourth season has already amassed 74 victories to become the second winningest coach in school history. Harper's players have had a great deal of success on the court, but have also excelled in the classroom, something the coach takes tremendous pride in.
Harper played for the legendary Pat Summitt at Tennessee and was an integral member of the Lady Vols' three consecutive national championships from 1996-98.
