University of Florida head football coach Urban Meyer signed a six-year, $24 million contract in recent weeks, and according to the Gainesville Sun, the coach of the defending national champions donated one million dollars of it to the Florida Opportunity Scholars program. Meyer partnered with Gators basketball coach Billy Donovan to raise private donations for the scholarship program. The effort has brought in over $8 million, excluding Meyer's personal donation. According to the Florida Opportunity Scholars website, the initiative is meant to "ensure first-generation students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds have the resources they need to be academically successful at the University of Florida."
