University of Iowa battles lasting impact of floods - Jun 16, 2009 | 10:04:12

One year after floods devastated portions of the region, the University of Iowa's track and field and softball teams are still recovering. According to The Daily Iowan, "university workers had to put in new dirt, lay new grass, rip out all existing carpet, and rebuild lockers" at the softball complex. "It was quite a challenge ... with Pearl, we redid the entire complex, including the three recreational fields," Associate Athletics Director Jane Meyer told the university paper. "We redid the locker rooms, to the restrooms, to the concession areas, and re-sodded the field." Damage to the track, which was undergoing improvements when the floods hit, meant the university was unable to host the Big Ten championships. The university will host the championships in 2011.
