Indiana Basketball Extravaganza, Day 2 - | 12:51:13
posted by: Ryan Powell

Howard and I are beginning the day a little earlier than scheduled. The RCA Dome, former home of the Indianapolis Colts, is being demolished at 9 a.m.. We are headed over to White River State Park to watch the explosion..

Read about Day 1 Two games. 159 miles traveled.

9 a.m. There's a crowd in White River State Park. About 30 of us are braving bone-chilling windchill. The thermometer says 28 degrees, but it's much colder. We've been waiting out here about 15 minutes no idea when the building is coming down. Doesn't look like 9 a.m.

9:15 a.m. -- it's officially cold. The Building is still standing. Face is numb.

9:25 a.m. -- We could have slept in. The bullding still standing. It's probably too much to ask for this to happen on time.

9:30 -- Some people are starting to leave. I'm off to pull the car around. I can't take the cold anymore.

9:36 -- Noooooooo. I missed the explosion. Howard say it, and didn't think it was worth the 50 minutes outside.

Now, Day 2 of the Indiana Basketball Experience officially begings. Next stop: Indianapolis vs. Lincoln Memorial at Nicoson Hall, 1 p.m. tip.

Game 3:Lincoln Memorial at University of Indianapolis, Division II women

1 p.m. -- Good crowd on hand for the game at Nicoson Hall. Howard and I have front row seats for the action. The Hounds take the early lead, 5-0.

1:10 p.m. Nicoson Hall is awesome. Bleacher seating rings the floor, and the fans are right on top of the action. I can smell popcorn, but haven't found it yet. Indianapolis is pouring it on, 20-6.

1:24 p.m. Indianapolis is building a commanding lead, 31-12. The Hounds are shooting lights out, nearly 60 percent from the field.

1:36 p.m. The Hounds are cruising in the first half. It's time for us to hit the road. We're off to Hinkle Fieldhouse. Barring a speeding ticket, we'll be there in 20 minutes. Thanks to the University of Indianapolis athletics department for taking care of us.

Game 4: Florida Gulf Coast at Butler, Division I men, 2 p.m., Indianapolis, IN (Hinkle Fieldhouse)

2:09 p.m. -- We're at Hinkle Fieldhouse, one of the greatest basketball arenas in the country. Hinkle Fieldhouse was constructed in 1928 and has stood up to the test of time. The place is packed. Looks like a lot of students stuck around after finals for the game.

BUTLER.jpg

2:15 p.m. -- Butler isn't wasting anytime. Five minutes in and the Bulldogs lead 13-3. Butler is tough to beat at home. They are playing at home for the first time this month, and boast wins in 46 of its last 50 contests at the Fieldhouse. The Bulldogs are 114-15 (.884) at home since 1999-2000.

2:36 p.m. -- Just met the Butler Bulldog.

butler2.jpg

2:42 p.m. -- I'm off to walk around and see if I can find the camera and Howard. Five minutes left in the first half, Butler leads 32-19.

3:22 p.m. -- Butler still leads at halftime. The halftime entertainment is mascot basktetball. It might be the funniest thing we've ever seen. The Indianapolis Ice mascot just flipped over a chair. Final score is 4-2. The fans definitely won.

3:24: That's all from Hinkle. We're off to the Purdue vs. Davidson game at Conseco Fieldhouse. The game starts in 36 minutes.

Game 5: Davidson vs Purdue, Division I men, 4 p.m., Indianapolis, IN (Conseco Fieldhouse)

3:50: p.m. -- We're at Conseco Fieldhouse. Media food is chicken and lasagna. Best food spread yet! Off to find our seats.

3:54 p.m. -- As we're walking onto the court, we get passed by the Purdue team heading for the lockers, and a couple of Purdue players got lost and almost ended up in the electrical closet. We're all laughing.

purdue1.jpg

3:59 p.m. -- Huge crowd. Stephen Curry was just introduced and is getting booed by the pro-Purdue crowd. Boilermakers are being introduced and the fans (looks close to a sellout) are on their feet. The tip is moments away.

4:12 -- Purdue is off to a hot start, 7-0. Haven't seen much out of Curry yet. Purdue student section is going crazy.

purdue2.jpg

4:16 p.m. -- Purdue pitching a shutout, 12-0. Crowd is going wild.

4:17 p.m. -- It's a final at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Butler knocks off Florida Gulf Coast, 73-53
Unbelievable. Purdue extends the lead to 21-0. Davidson can't make a shot.

4:40 p.m. -- Purdue is shutting down Curry, and Davidson is having a tough time getting anything going. Purdue's lead is almost 20. Purdue fans couldn't ask for a better start.

score.jpg

4:48 p.m. -- So far, home teams are 4-0. Purdue, the hometown team, leads Davidson 47-24 at halftime. Curry is 3-17 from the floor..

4:59 p.m. -- We're headed back to the media room for a couple more sodas and another run through the buffet. We've got a long drive to South Bend, Indiana. Notre Dame tips at 7:30 p.m. We'll have to hustle to make the game.

5:08 p.m. -- Back in the car. Howard driving, Ryan sleeping/blogging. Somebody wake me up when we get close. 125 miles to South Bend.

5:16 p.m. -- On US 31. Next stop Joyce Center and Delaware St. vs Notre Dame. Game starts at 7:30. So long, Indianapolis. indy.jpg

Game 6: Delaware State at Notre Dame, Division I men, 7 p.m., South Bend, IN (Joyce Center)

7:54 p.m. -- Arrived in South Bend. Drive took almost three hours. It started snowing about 60 miles from the arena. We made it here for the start of the second half. Notre Dames leads 43-25.

7:58 p.m. -- Joyce Center is awesome. I haven't been here since basketball camp 15 years ago. There isn't a giant scoreboad hanging from the rafters. It's a nice change and rreally opens things up. With all the seats so close to the floor, it isn't needed.

8:02 p.m. -- The Irish are up big, 55-28. We're sitting at half court. I'm betting we were on TV a bunch. Hi mom!

8:15 p.m. -- The game is flying by ... that probably happens when you miss the enitre first half. Irish lead 65-37.

8:18 p.m. -- Notre Dame's squad is even more impressive in person. They'll be a force when Big East Conference play rolls around.

8:21 p.m. -- Delaware State continues to play hard. They've hit a couple of big shots and are chasing down loose balls. Notre Dame leads, 72- 45. Delaware's schedule has been brutal. They've only played three home games this season..

ndfloor.jpg

8:34 p.m. -- Even though we missed the first half, this game might be the quickest Division I game in history. Notre Dame wins 88-50. Give Delaware State credit for playing hard until the final whistle. The Irish were just too much. was just too much. We're off to catch some the postgame news conference.

ndcoach.jpg

8:40 p.m. -- That was easy. Notre Dame head coach MIke Brey is doing his postgame interview right next to us. Coach Brey is talking about how fast the game went and how efficient the Irish played.

goirish.jpg

8:45 p.m. -- We just walked across the floor. It's awesome. The place is starting to clear out. Nobody can believe how fast the game went.

8:48 p.m. -- Howard just missed a shot from the corner. He also missed the rim, backboard and net. Too bad there isn't anyone left to chant "AIR-BALL!"

8:51 p.m. -- That's a wrap from South Bend. Day 2 of the Indiana Baskteball Extravaganza. Yesterday at this time we were still two hours away from the start of the Trine-Anderson game at Conseco Fieldhouse.

We're staying over in South Bend and will drive to Fort Wayne for the Duquesne-IPFW women's game in the morning. We'll talk to you again tomorrow!

It means that two very good teams with very good coaches made it to the final game.
