More bowl games, "Animal House" anniversary and cheerleading injuries - | 10:34:54

  • Seattle Sports Commission is interested in creating a 35th college football bowl game to be played in the city beginning in 2010. If you recall, the city recently hosted a bowl for a two year stretch in 2001 and 2002. Last year, two new bowl games were approved - the Congressional Bowl in Washington D.C. and the St. Petersburg Bowl in Florida. You often hear complaints that there are too many bowl games, while others believe student-athletes should have as many post-season opportunities as possible. Since it is sometimes difficult to find enough bowl-eligible teams at the Division I FBS level, why not give more opportunities to Division I FCS, II and III schools? Where do you stand on this issue?
  • The Olympic baseball competition seems to get overshadowed by many other sports, possibly because the U.S. team is made up of minor leaguers and college student-athletes (not well-known professionals). Last night, San Diego State pitcher Steven Strasburg took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, leading the Americans to a 7-0 win over the Netherlands. Would you rather see more amateur athletes competing in the Olympics - similar to past Olympics - or do you like the influx of high-profile professional athletes?
  • Former Missouri State student-athlete Brad Ziegler has not only made it to the Major Leagues, but he is flat out dominating against the game's best hitters. The Oakland A's pitcher hasn't allowed a run in his first 38 innings, which shattered the previous record for scoreless innings to begin a career. Ziegler hasn't even allowed an extra base hit in his Major League career.

  • According to a recent study, approximately two-thirds of all catastrophic sports injuries among female high school and college student-athletes are as a result of cheerleading. Specifically, the study found that cheerleading accounted for 66.7 percent of all catastrophic injuries to female college participants. There are some people that believe cheerleading should become an emerging sport on the collegiate level. What are your thoughts on cheerleading and the apparent dangers?

Why do we even concern ourselves with bowl eligibility? Ever since the Tournament of Roses wanted to boost tourism with a football game, bowls have been essentially business arrangements between schools/conferences and the host cities.

If a 3-9 Notre Dame team will bring more fans and money to a smaller bowl than most schools, why place restraints on that option?

It means that two very good teams with very good coaches made it to the final game.
