Wrestling coach makes Olympics, Wie in the news and Beckett's Texas connection -

  • American University Assistant Wrestling Coach Brad Vering, an NCAA Champion at Nebraska in 2000, will be representing the U.S. squad in Beijing. In 2006, Vering was at a crossroads in his career until Head Coach Mark Cody invited him to Washington to help with his squad. Since then, Vering has placed first at the U.S. Nationals, world team trials and Pan American games. He also helped coach AU wrestler Josh Glenn to a NCAA Championship. This is probably the last shot for the 31-year-old, and we'll be watching to see how he fares in Beijing.
  • On yesterday's Mondays with Myles, Dr. Brand discussed the need for diversity at college campuses, and how institutions need to find student-athletes that are able to handle the school's academic load and eventually graduate. On a similar track, on the latest edition of Campus Connection, we spoke with Jessica Chrabaszcz, a recent-graduate and former softball student-athlete at Delaware State, and Jeff Savage, the school's head softball coach. Chrabaszcz, who is a current NCAA intern, was not an ordinary attendee at the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) school. Chrabaszcz has an interesting story to tell, and it fits with Dr. Brand's message of finding a school that is right for you.
  • Michelle Wie announced she will be playing in the PGA's Reno-Tahoe Open next week, following a disappointing disqualification from last weekend's LPGA tournament. This is the first time Wie has teed it up with the men this year and her eighth PGA tournament over the last few years, although she has never made a cut. As it stands now, Wie will not be exempt on the LPGA next year. Do you think she should continue to play in PGA Tour tournaments when given the opportunity?
  • Since the college baseball season concluded about a month ago, perhaps you are missing the high scores common to the college game. Well, in case you weren't paying attention to the Major League Baseball scores last night, there were a couple of college baseball-like run totals that were piled up around the majors. The Dodgers took care of the Rockies in a classic Coors Field 16-10 affair, while Detroit beat up on Kansas City by a score of 19-4, which included a 10-run eighth inning. Metal bats are often blamed for the high scores in college baseball. Can you imagine Major League Baseball with metal bats?
  • When hearing of Trinity (Texas) in recent months, it has usually been because of the insane 15-lateral football miracle that was nominated for an ESPY. Well, the baseball team is now getting some publicity thanks to one former student-athlete's relationship with Boston Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett. In the offseason, Beckett, a Texas native, began throwing with former Trinity catcher and now assistant coach Zach Fregosi. Over the years, Beckett has become a regular at the Trinity baseball facility, and has formed a bond not only with Fregosi, but with the whole Tigers' team.

I find it very interesting that female athletes prefer male coaches more often than female coaches. For me personally, I could care less if I had a male or female coach.
