Retiring numbers, sports executives and Olympic dilemma - Jul 23, 2008

- Texas announced it will retire Vince Young, Kevin Durant, and seven other jersey numbers during this upcoming school year. Young led the Longhorns to a FBS national championship, while Durant had a remarkable freshman year, but didn't make it out of the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The bigger issue, however, is both of these players left school early, and furthermore, Durant only stayed one year in Austin. Given the fact that Durant was a one-and-done player at Texas, do you think the school should retire his number?
- TIME Magazine came out with a list of 35 notable sports executives and asked fans to vote on "who plays the game best." The only college sports executive on the list is Kansas Athletics Director Lew Perkins, who currently is in second place. He trails Sir Alex Ferguson, the manager of the Manchester United Soccer team. Do you think more college sports personalities should have been included on this list? Are you surprised that fans have voted Perkins so high?
- One of the overlooked sports stories from the past weekend was the occurrence of the first ever regular season outdoor basketball game, which took place between the WNBA's Indiana Fever and the New York Liberty. The contest was played at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. Although it was a steamy 87 degrees under the lights, it seems the game was a success since over 19,000 fans were in attendance. The NHL will be playing an outdoor game again this winter; this time the Chicago Blackhawks will face the Detroit Red Wings at Wrigley Field. We'll likely see the trend of playing sporting events in untraditional settings continue. Do you think college sports will ever follow suit?
