For the first time on Campus Connection, we spoke with a coach and one of his former student-athletes - Jessica Chrabaszcz, a recent-graduate and former softball student-athlete at Delaware State University and the school's head softball coach, Jeff Savage. Chrabaszcz is currently interning with the NCAA in the Eligibility Center.

Last year, the Hornets won their first ever MEAC Championship, in large part due to Chrabaszcz's play on the field. Chrabaszcz also excelled in the classroom and was named 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America First Team.

In the interview, the duo discussed many things related to the student-athlete experience at Delaware State. Coach Savage, who was kind enough to join us from the recruiting trail, gave a background on the institution and what it means to him to see his student-athletes be successful after they leave his program. Chrabaszcz talked about her decision to attend Delaware State out of high school, the student-athlete experience, and what she learned from her collegiate days that she will use throughout her career.

We loved the interview! Jessica's experience at Delaware State and with Coach Savage and her team could not have been duplicated elsewhere. We thoroughly agree you do not argue with Jessica.

Hornets softball without Jessica Chrabaszcz is somehow unthinkable. Even casual visitors to the Hornets Nest could not fail to sense the respect Jessica commanded on the field and the leadership evinced in countless team huddles occasioned by critical, high-stakes situations. When her spectacular offensive juggernaut sputtered in the final weeks of the season, fans saw only her frustration and determination; no excuses, no relenting and no hint of untoward demeanor. Her departure, coupled with that of similarly brilliant Nicole Demers, may well constitute the biggest single season loss DSU softball has yet endured and will almost certainly mark the end of an era in that program. I envy Coach Savage not the daunting task of rebuilding that lies ahead, but his role in the development of such gracious, determined competitors and remarkably gifted students.

It means that two very good teams with very good coaches made it to the final game.
