The NCAA sponsors 88 championships in 23 sports, which means that 88 times a year, one team from across the country has finished at the pinnacle of its sport. On Friday afternoon, the Rollins women's golf team hoisted one of the 88 coveted trophies.
Eighty-eight seems like a big number - it's double-digit, higher than 50 and is eerily close to 100. But when you stop to think about the fact that there are nearly 400,000 student-athletes competing in the NCAA on thousands and thousands of teams, the number seems more like Mini-Me than Mr. T.
Most student-athletes play their four years without even a sniff at a national championship event. They talk about it, think about it and dream about it, but most never get a chance to touch it.
On Saturday, one day after BYU-Hawaii's women's tennis team saw its 88-match winning streak snapped, five teams will win five titles, and about 60 student-athletes will finish their seasons on top, as national champions. They should feel proud of their accomplishments, because 88 just isn't a big number at all.

It means that two very good teams with very good coaches made it to the final game.
