• During last night's major competition, David Cook won American Idol, edging teenager David Archuleta by 12 million votes. In case you were wondering, the USC cheerleaders were on hand for one of the finale performances.

• There are now more than 400,000 NCAA student-athletes...and almost all of them will go pro in something other than sports. The NCAA's latest participation-rates research reveals the number of student-athletes who played championship sports during the 2006-07 academic year was 402,793. A total of 105 men's teams and 133 women's squads were added last year.

• Speaking of sports sponsorship, Georgia State and Hendrix have elected to add football to their athletics programs and both have determined that the economic commitment is an acceptable byproduct. Georgia State will begin competing in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2010, and will be permitted to offer as many as 65 scholarships. In order to help offset the costs, the institution has elected to levy an $85 annual fee approved by tuition-paying students. In the last decade, Georgia State has become a residential campus, and President Carl Patton says the students want a football program.

• Hendrix, on the other hand, will have the lone Division III football program in Arkansas, and while the college will incur additional costs as a result of sponsoring the sport, there are no athletics scholarships provided in Division III. Mostly, it seems that Hendrix is intrigued by football because it could be attractive to a larger pool of potential students, and hence have a positive impact on enrollment.

• Newspaper photographer Ryan McGeeney was speared by a javelin while shooting the high school state championship in Utah on Saturday. McGeeney turned out to be fine and even snapped a picture of his leg while receiving medical attention. This isn't the first time somebody has been hit by a flying javelin, so make sure to keep your eyes open next time you're at a track meet.

• The UCLA women's tennis team won its first-ever NCAA title on Tuesday, clinching the 102nd national title in school history. The Bruins had lost in the women's final five times before Tuesday's victory over California.
