Last month, LeBron James was featured on the cover of Vogue magazine, striking a controversial pose with supermodel Giselle Bundchen.

In light of last year's controversy with Don Imus, it seemed appropriate to check in with Emmett Gill, an assistant professor in Rutgers University's School of Social Work.

Dr. Gill, a former student-athlete and father of a teenage girl, discusses the portrayal of female student-athletes in the media. He also addresses the impact of the Imus controversy and how it affected the Rutgers community.

Interesting conversation. I do wonder though in his description of a game at Uconn where a Rutgers player gave a foul on Uconn's best player and someone yelled out thug how this is interpreted that it was about the athlete being black. Has thug be deemed a racist word? I miss the correlation here. That could have been yelled to any player who just fouled Uconn's best player which happens to be black also. Bill Lambier made a living on being a thug. Is Prince a thug? I doubt it. Does she play hard? Yes. Will people at a rival school dislike her because she is so good and can cause their team to lose? Definitely.

Mr. Gill's goals for his daughter in sports are great but they should be universal and not limited to one's race. They are great standards for humanity.

With the comments on participation into nontraditional sports that has to start with access. Those sports mentioned are limited more on availability - there are millions of white kids along with black that are unable to participate in those sports.

Why don't we ever talk about the status of Hispanics in college athletics, if we want to talk about races. They are ever growing population here in the US. Are they being fairly represented in collegiate athletics? Just a question.
