Olympicpalooza, the Frozen Four and T.S. Eliot - Apr 11, 2008

- It's an Olympicrific day today. First off, swimsuit manufacturer Arena wants Fina, the international body governing swimming, to investigate new suits (including their own) that have been linked to a rash of new world records. Arena claims the suits give too much advantage to the athletes, creating "irrecoverable loss of credibility, just a few months before the Olympic Games." Question of the day: Do the new swimsuits used in competition create an unfair advantage?
- In other Olympic news, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will not attend the opening ceremonies in Beijing. Although his office blames scheduling conflicts, it's easy to wonder if the secretary isn't bowing to increased international pressure to boycott.
- April is indeed the cruelest month. Eight Olympic teammates of Marion Jones have had their medals revoked. The decision, which has been expected for some time, caused Double-A blogger Josh Centor to argue with himself. Read Josh's bout with split personality.
- Softball and baseball made their first plea for reinstatement to the IOC. If the sports make it back to the Olympics, it wouldn't happen until 2012 in Copenhagen. Perhaps softball and baseball could take solace in another T.S. Eliot poem. "There will be time, there will be time..."
- Boston College heads to its third straight hockey championship, meeting Notre Dame in the final game. The schools have a long history of rivalry on the football field, but the Irish weren't much competition this year. Is Notre Dame trading dominance on the field for icy supremacy?
- Delaware's Joe Flacco could be picked in the first round of the NFL draft, which would make him just the third non Division I-A quarterback picked in the first two rounds.
- Finally, Nelson Figueroa is making our resident NCAA Brandeis grad and former baseball player giddy. The reason? The DIII Brandeis standout will throw tonight for the Mets against the Brewers.
