Talking Blog With Kareem Abdul-Jabbar -
posted by: Josh

Watch out blogosphere, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has joined the party.

The former UCLA and Los Angeles Lakers great launched a blog on the Los Angeles Times Web site (www.latimes.com/kareem) earlier this month and decided to swing by the NCAA’s own blog to discuss his venture.

I’ve had a chance to read most of Kareem’s posts and his blog is quite impressive. You might expect that the blog would have a basketball focus, but that’s actually not the case. Kareem has always been a history buff and uses his forum to celebrate the heritage of African-Americans and discuss Harlem, jazz and aspects of popular culture.

In our conversation, Kareem also discusses his latest book, “On The Shoulders of Giants,” which was recently released in an audio format. If you like history, jazz and hoops – or any combination of those things – I’d highly recommend picking up a copy of the “audio and musical journey through the Harlem Renaissance.”

Of course, we couldn’t let Kareem go without having him discuss the impact his education has had on his life, as well as the mentorship provided by legendary coach John Wooden.

I hope you’ll take the time to listen to this fascinating conversation and welcome one of the greatest basketball players in history to the world of blogging.

I think it's terrific that a superstar like Kareem is so accessible. What a tremendous opportunity for fans to interact with a legend. It's also awesome that Kareem is making a priority to learn about new media later in his life. What a testament to the benefits of life-long learning!

If only more athletes were as culturally and politically conscious as Kareem, we'd have a totally different outlook on life.

I have recruited kids to play basketball in college that lived in very destitute situations that had to take the Greyhound to get to college...when they got out they still had bills.
