The Life and Times of Kyle Hines - Nov 09, 2007

North Carolina-Greensboro basketball standout Kyle Hines was named Southern Conference player of the year last season for his outstanding performance on the hardwood, and returns this year as a candidate for all-American honors. While he is pursuing a conference title and berth in the NCAA tournament this winter, the 6-foot-6 communications major will also spend time blogging for the Double-A Zone.
I first would like to welcome all of you to my blog. I am really excited to do this, having done one for our Web site and the local newspaper when we were in Italy this past summer.
During each post you will able to read my “inner thoughts” and gain an inside look of my life during this - my senior season. Before I go any further, I should probably let everyone know just who I am.
First, I am originally from a small town called Sicklerville, New Jersey. It is okay if you never heard of it because no one else, outside of the people that live there, have either. If you’ve every driven to Atlantic City, you’ve driven through it – right where the AC Expressway starts. For those that haven’t, it is located about 20 miles outside of Philadelphia. And yes, I’m not afraid to admit that despite their struggles I am an Eagles, Sixers and Phillies fan. (Hey, at least the Phillies made the playoffs this year!)
I’m entering my senior season at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. This May, I will receive a degree in communication studies, which is hard to believe because it feels like yesterday that I was just a freshman playing in my first game.
Some would say that I’ve had a great career to this point. I’m currently on pace to become UNCG’s all-time leading scorer within the next couple weeks. I’m also currently on pace to be a member of the 2,000-point and 1,000-rebound club, which less than 100 people in NCAA history have achieved. Some people think I’m also an All-American candidate since I am the reigning Southern Conference Player of the Year and was an AP honorable mention All-American last year. Even though I’m very proud of all those accomplishments – and this may sound really politically correct – I would trade all those honors for the one thing that really matters – a Southern Conference Championship.
Personally, I would feel that my career would be incomplete without that. That has been the one thing that I’ve been thinking about almost everyday since the moment I started my career at UNCG – winning the league title and going to the NCAA tournament. We were really close my freshman year, losing late in the title game.
Now that I’m in last year, the urgency and pressure is heavier than ever to accomplish the goal because, for me and the rest of the senior class, there is no more next year.
Our team this year has a lot of talent and I think we have the potential to accomplish very big things. We will count on the other two seniors, Doob (Dwayne Johnson – our point guard) and K.O. (Kevin Oleksiak – who is another Philly guy and shares in my hometown team pain), our four seasoned sophomores, and a slew of newcomers for this upcoming season. We were predicted to finish first in our division, so the expectations are very high for this team. We finished our preseason camp on a high note, beating our cross-campus neighbors Greensboro College in an exhibition game Wednesday. The game started slow, but ended up being a very exciting game. The student section made the atmosphere very electrifying as we pulled away in the second half. The overall objective of the game was for us to fine-tune some things before the start of the regular season and we were able to do that for the most part.
We open the season up at Georgia Tech on Friday night - a big opportunity for our team to start the season on a high note and build momentum for this rest of the year. This will be kind of a bittersweet moment for me because it is my last-first game in a UNCG uniform. I hope that this will mark the beginning of a very special season for our entire team. If we play hard and play as a cohesive unit, I’m confident that we can win
I would to thank you all for taking the time to read my inner thoughts and experiences thus far into the season. I would like to invite you all to continue reading and follow me as I embark on this long journey during this season – one that will hopefully lead my teammates and me to a championship and a trip to the Big Dance. Until next time…
