On The Road With Duke Women's Soccer - | 11:08:23

Last week, Duke women???s soccer player Allison Lipsher shared some thoughts from the road.

After a long string of home games, DWS [Duke women???s soccer] is back on the road and back to our usual antics. Of course no trip would be complete without some sort of airport trouble and this past weekend???s trip to Boston College proved to be no different.

Dragging ourselves out of our comfy hotel beds at 6:30 a.m., we were greeted by a disheveled-looking Robbie Church saying that our flight had been delayed three hours (the battle rages on, Airports-39, while Robbie is still clinging to his lone victory with 1). Luckily, checking in three hours early for a flight ensures me enough time to poke fun at everyone who has done something worthy of a sarcastic while I write this notebook.

It seems like we have squeezed so much into the last couple of weeks. We completed our six-game home stand last week with five wins, opened up the ACC season with a disappointing loss to Virginia, and a very exciting double-overtime win against Virginia Tech. Kelly Hathorn -- after scoring the game-winning goal in this game immediately cramped up and fell to the ground laughing, crying and yelling ???no dog pile!???

For those of you who don???t know Kelly, this is actually not that surprising. It was quite a scene to say the least. Despite all of the happiness surrounding the win, there was also a bit of sadness within the team as it was our trainer, Elizabeth Zanolli???s, last game with us. She took a position as a head trainer at a school in New York (We miss you Z!!!).

Jen McCollum has done a great job filling in for her so far, and we are keeping her extremely busy with a wide variety of strains, sprains, coughs and colds, as well as our usual healthy dose of general complaining.

So this week the team headed north to play our third ACC game against Boston College. On Friday morning the team partook in our usual pre-game jog, stretch and soccer-tennis match. The sophomore-junior class thought that they were going to get away with an easy victory winning the first game, but the ???freniors??? staged an impressive comeback in the second game to force a tiebreaker. However, the ???junmors??? eventually won, and the teams are now locked in a tiebreaker in both catchphrase and soccer tennis. I???m not sure if everyone is going to make it out of this competition unharmed...

Before I talk about the game, the Duke Women???s Soccer team would like to thank Gretchen Miller for bringing the entire population of upstate New York to our soccer game last night -- I think we gave Fenway a run for its money. Their trek through Red Sox territory was well worth it, as the game was an extremely exciting hard-fought battle by both teams all the way to the final whistle. The game ended in a tie, and although we of course are disappointed we didn???t come out with a win, we were able to walk off the field of one of our toughest games of the season knowing that we left everything on the field. And we also ensured that by the time postseason comes around, we will be well-prepared to deal with any overtime situation that comes our way, we are closing in on a total of 75 minutes of overtime so far this season.

That???s all for now, thank you to everyone who came out to our games over the last couple of weeks, we really appreciate the support, and we hope to see you again!

It means that two very good teams with very good coaches made it to the final game.
