Last Monday, NCAA President Myles Brand discussed the rate of growth in college sports on his weekly podcast. One week later, he talks about the number of dollars institutions are spending to support their student-athletes. In the Austin American-Statesman package, it was revealed that Texas spends more than $200,000 per Longhorn student-athlete. That money goes toward tuition, housing, textbooks, travel, food, academic services and much, much more. For those who argue that schools should pay student-athletes, look no further than the $200,000 it takes to support each one. CommentsI completely agree with this article. Schools should not be required to pay student-athletes for their services on the field. Technically they are getting paid, because all of their major expenses are being accounted for while the average student has to pay that out of his / her pocket. Student-athletes should be happy with the amount of support they receive. $200,000 a year to spend on any one student is expensive enough. If schools had to pay student-athletes on top of that, tuition would skyrocket and that would be unfair to the rest of the student body population. Post a Comment |
