Oregon adds baseball. With rival Oregon State winning back-to-back baseball national championships, Oregon has decided to bring the national pastime back to Eugene after a 26-year hiatus. The only school in the Pac-10 without a baseball program, Oregon will begin play in 2009. Although Oregon says the success of its rival isn???t the reason it???s bringing back baseball, I think it had to play a part in the decision. I???m a baseball guy, so I love to see the sport???s popularity grow at the college level, but I???m not excited that Oregon has decided to discontinue its wrestling program. I deplore the idea of one sport replacing another, and this doesn???t feel great to me. Oregon has also decided to add competitive cheer for female student-athletes. Competitive cheer is not an NCAA-sponsored sport.
Thirty bucks can wait. Georgetown???s Roy Hibbert may not have the $30 to pay for cable at his apartment off campus, but that wasn???t enough of a reason for him to forego his senior season. Although he could be a millionaire in an NBA uniform right now, Hibbert decided to finish his college eligibility and take another stab at a national championship this winter. The 7-foot-2 center will have to wait for his riches, but if Friday???s Sports Illustrated article is any indication, he???s happy to take the ride.
Big East expands schedule. I believe the Big East to be the best and deepest basketball conference in the country. This season, we???ll get to see a bit more Big East action, as the conference has expanded its schedule from 16 to 18 games. This means that every team will play all of the conference schools once and three teams twice.
