In a column written on May 27 by Ron Morris of the The State newspaper in Columbia, South Carolina, the columnist is of the opinion that the Academic Progress Rate is here to stay as the single most important step to returning integrity to college athletics.

"It's very important for all us who are fans to support this kind of activity because it is important to the student-athletes and the institutions. It's an obligation we have to these young people to see that they get an education. That is the moral duty of every institution,"" says William Friday, former chairman of the Knight Foundation. The Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics has been a strong supporter of the NCAA academic reform efforts, earlier this month releasing a statement urging college presidents to resist pressure to weaken the reforms.
