Middle Tennessee Student-Athlete Gets Start In Broadcasting - | 8:38:14

Middle Tennessee softball student-athlete Melissa Weiland may have found her calling this fall. After being asked to assist with radio broadcasts for the volleyball team, Weiland jumped at the opportunity and stayed with the team through its conference championship and a victory in the NCAA tournament. In today???s guest blog, the current graduate student shares some of her favorite memories.

My experience with the volleyball team first started out just helping with online stats. However, the way my experience started is definitely not how it ended.

While I thoroughly enjoyed helping with the stats, a great opportunity was offered to me that I couldn???t turn down. The media relation person over volleyball, Denise Gideon, asked me at one of the matches early in the year if I wanted to assist Russell Luna with the live broadcast. My initial reaction was ???oh gosh??? I have no experience in broadcasting and I don???t want to embarrass myself! But I went anyway and struggled through the first match.

Poor Russell! I was pretty bad. I decided to take the opportunity to get involved with broadcasting to overcome my fear of public speaking. I???ve always struggled speaking in front of a crowd so what better an opportunity than to analyze a college sport, especially one I am very familiar with. I knew the game of volleyball very well being a former high school volleyball player.

The first couple broadcasts I felt were a struggle, but with Russell???s help he pulled me through it and made it run smooth. The thing that I felt was most challenging was drowning out the crowd when speaking, but after a while it became easy. I felt the more I let myself get into the game, as far as the emotion and the game???s intensity, the better the broadcast we had.

The first broadcast that I felt at ease with was against one of MT???s biggest rivals, Western Kentucky. Since I currently play softball for Middle Tennessee, knowing the big rival of Western seemed to just carry over and lit a fire in me as a player doing the broadcast for volleyball. I tried to maintain a level of professionalism since the broadcast was being heard from many different fans, but in my heart I bleed TRUE BLUE!!

I believe that was one of the best broadcasts of the year! From that day on I thoroughly enjoyed coming to every match and providing the live broadcast for all the anticipating fans whether they were family members of the players or just Blue Raider fans in hope of giving a broadcast that was informative, energetic, and made them feel that they were in the gym with us.

We also played Western to win the Sunbelt regular season championship and the No. 1 seed.

First, I must say also as a fan in the stands watching Middle Tennessee???s volleyball team is very easy on the eyes because they are such a well rounded, powerful, and extremely athletic team. While I was at work, it almost felt like I was getting paid to play because I had such a good time analyzing their matches. The intensity and energy that the players brought the day they won the championship was phenomenal and I believe no one could have beaten them because they were so prepared and so focused. While volleyball is a back and forth game, that particular match they maintained the momentum for the majority of all the games. As the game progressed, one could see the discouraged looks on the Western player???s faces, as they knew their defeat was soon to come because the Blue Raiders were so on! That particular day, the volleyball team made all of Middle Tennessee very proud! It was an awesome experience as the girls jumped up and down in excitement as they beat WKU on their home floor and earned a conference ring.

Who would think that the broadcasting journey could get any better! Oh but it did! The volleyball team went to the NCAA tournament! A landmark that I as a softball player at this point in time have only been able to dream about!

The Tournament, the BIG DANCE, the event that all collegiate players work so hard for all preseason and regular season to reach is where Middle Tennessee was headed. I was so excited when I heard that Russell and I were invited to be a part of this wonderful landmark in Middle Tennessee???s history.

Overall this whole experience will never be forgotten. From the crazy road trip up to Louisville, to the overwhelming sense of competitiveness as we walked in the building, to everyone???s hairs standing on end waiting with anticipation for the Middle Tennessee vs. Louisville match to start, it was an experience that will never be replaced.

And of course, the girls did it again and upset Louisville. That game was so nerve racking because it seemed as if neither team could gain momentum or pull away. It went all the way down to the wire. Of course the win was well deserved by our girls. Being a part of the NCAA Tournament I think will definitely give me an edge going into the softball season not only as a player, but also as a leader and an individual. While I was still only the broadcaster looking from the outside in, it definitely is extra motivation to work harder and dig deeper to hope and strive to one day reach every team???s goal of going to the NCAA tournament. I will certainly share the experience with my teammates because now it seems only an arm???s length away.

I want to finish with first thanking Middle Tennessee for providing me the opportunity to be a part of a journey that is going to be real hard to beat. I want to thank Denise for believing enough in me to even ask me to be a part of the broadcasting team and thanks to Russell, for being a wonderful, hilarious, and awesome partner. And most importantly thank you head coach Matt Peck and the volleyball players for a wonderful, entertaining, and unforgettable season! Hopefully we can be on the joy ride even longer next season! Go Blue Raiders!

GO MO! Nice work with the broadcasting! Believe me, while keeping the scoreboard during home games I could hear Melissa broadcasting from the stands. Wow! I give her credit, I would have been nervous. Not Mo, she was a natural!

Great read. Facing the fear of public speaking in such a public setting is a mark of character. Nice job!
