A Conversation With Former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue -
posted by: Josh

This afternoon, I sat down with former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue before he received the NCAA’s highest honor, the Theodore Roosevelt Award.

A former basketball student-athlete at Georgetown and Rhodes Scholar finalist, Commissioner Tagliabue discussed the importance of education and how he transitioned from a career in the Pentagon to become the leader of professional football.

In our interview, we chat about the NFL’s success in hiring minority coaches and why college football programs are lagging behind. We also discuss the importance of sportsmanship in both intercollegiate and professional athletics as well as the escalating salaries of coaches.

Glad to see that Tagliabue believes in sportsmanship, equity amongst teams, and diversity. The diversity piece was the best and he's a prime example of how leaders should incorporate chances for all.

As a student, eager to become as much of an intellectual as I can become, I am eager to hear intellectual and knowledgeable people talk about thee profession and life experiences. Listening to Tagliabue talk about his opinions on intercollegiate sports and the difficult task of becoming a pro out of college is humbling. I like the fact that although he was one of the biggest supporters of the NFL, he speaks honestly about the skill necessary to go pro. Little to my knowledge, high school students are denied the chance to become pro for 3 years after graduating. The fact that a multi-billion dollar industry is taking a responsible step towards giving immature and life experience lacked teenagers the chance to further their education. Knowing this makes me respect not only the former commissioner, but also the NFL as a whole.

Although I am like most guys who are into the UFC and combat type sports, I find it even more necessary to encourage sportsmanship within even the most violent sports. Watching two teams in the NFL with a rivalry makes for a great game. The intensity keeps viewers on the edge of their seat. It truly ruins a great game when incidents such as Terrell Owens spitting in an opponent’s face is displayed for all to see. It is good to know that the NFL is determined to see the professionalism continue through the sport.
