Black Coaches Association Report Card Results Are Unacceptable - | 16:56:06

First-year Kansas State Head Coach Ron Prince.

In its report card released Thursday, the Black Coaches Association reported improvement in the hiring practices among Division I football programs. Of the 26 programs in the division that hired head coaches in the last year, a record 12 received overall grades of A. On the other side, however, six schools received F???s.

While the BCA is looking for more minority coaches to be hired at Division I programs, they also evaluate programs on the diversity of their search committees. If a program hires a Caucasian coach but has a diverse hiring team, it will likely score quite well on the report card.

The BCA isn???t asking for African-American coaches to fill every vacant position in the country; the association is simply asking for diversity on the hiring team and for black candidates to be considered.

There have been 414 coaching vacancies in Division I since 1982. Only 21 African-Americans have been hired to fill those positions. If you read the numbers a couple of times, you will quickly become appalled. It took too long for coaches to put black quarterbacks under center and it???s taking too long for African-American coaches to find their place on the college sidelines.

It???s amazing that 40 years after Texas Western became the first basketball team to win the national championship with five black starters, we???re still fighting the same battle on the gridiron.

I think that it shouldn???t matter if you are black or white. A coach is a coach regardless of his color. If a man can get the job done and is qualified for the job then he should deserve it. We shouldn???t be looking at the fact that there aren???t that many black coaches in the NCAA, we should be looking at which coaches are best for the programs. Many coaches out there are not getting jobs just because of the color of their skin. I thought that every man was created equal.

Football is a game that everyone loves. We shouldn???t be putting this blanket of negativity over the sport due to the fact that coaches aren???t getting hired because of their race. Like I said before, if he is most qualified for the job then it should be his hands down.

I cannot agree more that there should have been more minority hirings out of that large a number of vacancies. There shouldn't be any question that there are qualified coaches available for more openings.

But I don't agree with equating Texas Western's basketball team to the issue of football coaches. It just isn't the same issue.

After reading this report I think that this is unfair. You should never be singled out by your race in any way. Your race should mean absolutely nothing. It???s who you are as a person and what kind of drive you have for success!

This article should not even be brought up but I guess it???s sad that people think through their eyes instead of what they know is right.

It means that two very good teams with very good coaches made it to the final game.
